A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, resulted in damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the area. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) expressed uncertainty regarding any potential impact on the project’s timeline due to the incident.
The fire erupted near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday night and was promptly addressed by the community’s fire department, according to Naujaat’s senior administrative officer Chantal Pelletier. The NHC mentioned that the materials were intended for an eight-unit public housing initiative.
Following the fire, officials from the NHC are collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage, pending the fire chief’s report. The completion date for the eight-unit housing complex is set for June 2027, though the NHC spokesperson emphasized that it is premature to assess the potential timeline impact of the fire at this stage.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) declined to provide any details or confirm if an investigation is underway, as mentioned in an email statement.
