Ravinder Sidhu and his sister Nav journeyed from India to Toronto to attend Sidhu Moose Wala’s Signed to God world tour debut at Scotiabank Arena last Friday, purchasing tickets for $550 each. They anticipated a unique and extraordinary show because the Punjabi rapper, who originated his music career in Canada, tragically passed away in 2022 following a fatal shooting near his hometown in Northern India. A hologram stood in for Moose Wala during the performance, showcasing the technology’s capability to offer an unforgettable fan experience at a premium cost.

Expressing his excitement, Ravinder mentioned to CBC News outside the venue that the show might have a futuristic touch, leaving them thrilled. Another fan, Harry Singh, shared that he paid $270 for his ticket, in addition to airfare from California. Singh highlighted the significant price surge, with last-minute tickets skyrocketing to around $1,500, making his early purchase fortunate.

Some tickets for the Toronto event were listed online for nearly $2,000 before taxes and fees, mirroring similar prices for the upcoming show in Vancouver. Singh, reflecting on the expectations of a lifelike experience, awaited the show eagerly.

Following the concert, Singh reported that the event featured an unreleased song titled “Rebirth” and a cameo appearance by the late rapper’s younger brother. In a video captured during the performance, Singh found himself amidst a sea of smartphones raised in the air as the audience sang along with Moose Wala’s hologram on stage.

Sidhu Moose Wala’s music journey flourished while he resided in Brampton, Ontario, a hub for the Punjabi diaspora. Moose Wala frequently paid tribute to the city in his songs and music videos, notably in his 2018 track “B-Town,” dedicated to Brampton.

Music expert Alan Cross emphasized the emergence of digital-first performances, citing the success of Abba Voyage in London, where the Swedish pop group’s de-aged digital avatars performed alongside a live band. Cross underscored the holographic concert trend’s growth, driven by aging rock stars, strategic music catalog acquisitions, and a tech-savvy audience accustomed to the digital era.

Furthermore, David Nussbaum, the founder of Proto, a Los Angeles-based hologram company, highlighted the practicality of using holographic technology to revive deceased stars like Ozzy Osbourne. Nussbaum emphasized the personalized interactions facilitated by the technology, enabling fans to engage with their favorite artists in various languages, enhancing the connection between fans and artists, living or deceased.

The narrative of holographic performances, once a mere concept of fiction, has evolved over the years for entertainment purposes. Cross-referencing the digital resurrection of the late rap star Tupac Shakur at the Coachella Festival in 2012, tech expert Carmi Levy noted the revolutionary impact of holographic displays on the entertainment and technology industries.

Looking ahead, Proto aims to seamlessly merge lifelike, AI-powered holograms into reality, expanding holographic experiences beyond entertainment to diverse sectors like healthcare and education. Nussbaum highlighted the versatility of holographic technology, with applications ranging from medical consultations in remote areas to educational lectures delivered globally.

Levy envisioned a future where holographic experiences become accessible to consumers in their homes, emphasizing the industry’s trajectory towards integrating advanced 3D AI capabilities into everyday multimedia devices. The ongoing evolution of holographic technology signifies a shift towards a future where immersive holographic experiences become commonplace.
