A recent report suggests that Canadians need to prepare for a future where temperatures could rise by 5 degrees Celsius. The latest edition of Canada’s Changing Climate Report highlights the significant impact of human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, on climate change. The report, released by the federal government, emphasizes the importance of global efforts to fulfill climate commitments to mitigate the effects of climate change.
According to the report, if current climate policies are maintained worldwide, Canada is likely to experience intensified warming, leading to adverse climate conditions. By the end of the century, Canada could see a temperature increase of 5 degrees Celsius, with some regions, like Nunavut, facing even higher warming levels. The report predicts a substantial loss of glaciers in western Canada and the potential for the central Arctic Ocean to be ice-free in most Septembers.
The report also warns of challenges in southern Canada, where most of the population resides. Projections indicate longer, more intense summer droughts, as well as an increase in the frequency and intensity of flash flooding and atmospheric rivers. The length of the fire season in Canada is expected to increase further as global temperatures rise.
However, the report emphasizes that the future is not set in stone. If countries uphold their climate policies, temperatures could stabilize with an average warming of 3.5 degrees Celsius. Conversely, abandoning climate policies could lead to a 6.9-degree Celsius increase in average temperatures. The Canadian Climate Institute stresses the importance of taking immediate action to reduce emissions to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change.
In response to the report, a climate advocacy group called for increased efforts to reduce emissions, highlighting the recent flash flooding in Toronto as a direct result of climate change. The Canadian government reaffirmed its commitment to combating climate change and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
It is crucial for Canada and the global community to take decisive action to mitigate the impact of climate change and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
