Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing following the devastating flooding in Nepal’s border region with China has been located safe and sound. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China. The catastrophe resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, with over 1,100 fatalities reported and more than 3,900 individuals still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has indicated that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are among those missing.
Anand announced that Canada will dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region, supplementing the $5 million in humanitarian assistance that Ottawa had already committed. This aid aims to support the ongoing relief efforts in the aftermath of the tragic event.
