Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe to determine if Fruit of the Loom and Hanes utilize harmful chemicals in the production of children’s undergarments. Paxton issued investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns over the potential impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. While no allegations of misconduct were made against either company, Fruit of the Loom and its parent company Berkshire Hathaway did not provide immediate comments to Reuters’ requests for clarification.
Gildan, the Canadian owner of Hanes, has stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation. The company emphasized its commitment to adhering to strict manufacturing and sourcing standards in line with industry regulations regarding hazardous substances. Gildan, which recently merged with HanesBrands Inc. in a multi-billion-dollar deal, affirmed its dedication to delivering safe and top-quality products to consumers.
Attorney General Paxton highlighted the industry trend of using synthetic materials like polyester and spandex to meet consumer demand for affordable clothing. He cited studies indicating that synthetic fabrics can release microplastics and flagged chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and “forever chemicals” commonly found in textile manufacturing as potential health risks, including cancer and hormone disruption.
Paxton emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from exposure to toxic substances, urging for the assurance that essential products used by parents are free from harmful chemicals. Earlier this year, Paxton also launched a similar investigation into Lululemon Athletica’s activewear for possible presence of “forever chemicals” that pose environmental concerns due to their slow degradation.
The Texas attorney general, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in an upcoming election, faces competition from Democrat James Talarico and is currently trailing in most polls. The race is closely watched as one of the pivotal contests in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3.
