Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections in the ridings of North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec. With the Liberals holding 170 seats in the House of Commons due to vacancies, the opposition parties collectively have 166 seats. The Liberals aim to secure at least two wins to ensure control over the legislative agenda once all seats are filled.

The race in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord is expected to be highly contested, as former Conservative MP Richard Martel vacated the seat after being appointed to the Senate. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are in a close battle for the riding, according to polling data. Daniel Gobeil represents the Liberals, while Caroline Dubé is the Bloc’s candidate. Other contenders include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.

In Beaches-East York, candidates are vying to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The contenders in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.

Meanwhile, in North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are competing to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who was appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections with chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and host David Cochrane on Power & Politics. The coverage will begin at 9:30 p.m. ET and will be available for streaming on CBC News platforms. If the Liberals do not win all three byelections, they will have more opportunities in the future to secure the necessary victories for a majority in the House of Commons.
