In the recent Fat Marmot Week event organized in Gothic, Colo., a plump yellow-bellied marmot named Dawn emerged as the crowd favorite. The contest featured a vote and a weigh-in to determine the heaviest contestant before hibernation. Dawn clinched both victories, showcasing a remarkable weight gain from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms over the summer, nearly doubling in size.

Known for fathering multiple litters of baby marmots and for his unusual habit of licking salt and minerals off rocks, Dawn was hailed as a deserving winner by event organizer Katie Adler. However, as the reigning champion, Dawn has also assumed the role of an unofficial ambassador for the Marmot Project, a crucial long-term research initiative facing financial uncertainties due to cuts in science and education funding in the U.S.

The Marmot Project, which commenced in 1962 and stands as the world’s second-longest study of individually marked mammals, faces an uncertain future amidst ongoing funding challenges. With a history of studying over 5,000 marmots across 12 generations, the project aims to understand how these creatures adapt to environmental changes and human disturbances.

To combat funding shortages, the Marmot Project initiated innovative campaigns such as the creation of “OnlyMarms” on the platform OnlyFans. This move aims to raise awareness and garner support for their research endeavors. Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges the need for sustainable funding to continue its long-term research efforts.

In response to the funding crisis, the Marmot Project launched a petition urging Congress to reverse the cuts and secure the future of scientific research. While these efforts have garnered some support, the project continues to face challenges in maintaining its research activities. Plans are already in motion for the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027, with hopes of further engaging the public in appreciating and supporting marmot conservation efforts.
