According to a recent report from the Pembina Institute, the proposed Meta Data Centre in Sturgeon County, Alta., could lead to an increase of $270 to $460 annually on household electricity bills once operational.
The Meta Data Centre, backed by Meta Platforms Inc., is part of a $13 billion data center complex project set to be completed in the next two to three years. These data centers are crucial facilities that house the necessary computing hardware for various AI applications, contributing to 4.4% of U.S. electricity demand in 2023, a figure expected to rise to 12% by 2028.
Despite assurances from the provincial government and Meta that the Edmonton-area data center will not raise electricity costs for Albertans, experts suggest that the gap between the center’s operation and the completion of the Greenlight Electricity Centre, its associated power plant, could lead to upward pressure on consumer electricity prices.
David Pickup, the director of energy at the Pembina Institute, highlighted the potential impact on electricity prices, emphasizing that the situation could improve once additional supply becomes available. Kent Fellows, an economics professor, warned that the data center’s demand could affect electricity prices if new generation capacity does not keep pace.
With Meta’s significant electricity requirements potentially straining Alberta’s power grid, concerns are raised about potential price hikes and supply challenges. Renewable energy and energy-saving technologies are suggested as solutions to mitigate these issues.
