The Israeli government has issued a warning to escalate “targeted strikes” in Gaza unless Hamas stops the use of kites by Palestinians, including children, flying towards Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” on Sunday, discussing the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. Netanyahu emphasized that if the launches do not halt immediately, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate the population from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons.

“We will not tolerate any threats to our communities from Hamas or any other group in Gaza that compromise our citizens’ security,” Netanyahu stated. However, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa in Khan Younis, flying kites by the shore serves as a way to find solace amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Omar mentioned that flying kites brings joy as there is little else left in Gaza to bring happiness.

Prior to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons sent from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent Israeli strikes and tank fire resulted in the death of four individuals, including two children, following a U.S. delegation’s request to reduce attacks. The ongoing violence has claimed numerous lives on both sides, with casualties reported in Gaza and Israel.

Hamas condemned Netanyahu’s statements regarding children flying kites, accusing Israel of planning further aggression and displacement. The group demanded international condemnation of Israel’s actions and urged adherence to a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Despite the risks involved, children like Omar are determined to continue flying kites as a form of joy and escape amidst the turmoil surrounding them.

As tensions persist, the children in Gaza persevere, adapting their activities to the changing circumstances, flying kites near their tents as the sun sets.
