In recent weeks, a rendition of Madonna’s popular song “Like a Prayer” gained significant airplay on Australian radio stations. However, this cover now faces exclusion from official music charts due to new regulations implemented by the Australian music industry.
The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA), responsible for overseeing the nation’s music charts, made a public announcement outlining the prohibition of tracks entirely created by artificial intelligence. ARIA’s spokesperson, Andrew Knowles, emphasized that recordings must contain a substantial human element to be considered for the ARIA charts.
Tracks heavily reliant on generative AI for creative aspects will not meet the eligibility criteria for chart inclusion. ARIA clarified that if AI significantly contributes to core elements like lead vocals or instrumentation, the track will be disqualified. Additionally, any concerns regarding manipulation of streaming or chart data will prompt ARIA to remove the content from consideration.
The changes introduced by ARIA aim to endorse the authenticity of human artistry in a rapidly evolving music landscape. Chief executive Annabelle Herd emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency in chart measurements and upholding copyright laws within the music industry.
The decision comes following the success of Brisbane DJ and producer Josh Fawaz’s AI-enhanced version of “Like a Prayer” on the ARIA charts. Fawaz’s track, featuring AI-generated vocals and drums, triggered debates and criticisms regarding the use of generative AI in music production.
Notably, Fawaz’s music drew backlash from figures in the industry, with music producer Mitch Thomas accusing Fawaz of relying entirely on AI for music creation. Fawaz defended his approach, stating that AI serves as a tool rather than the sole creator of his music.
Effective next Monday, tracks solely produced by AI will be excluded from the ARIA charts, while AI-assisted music will still be considered. ARIA confirmed that Fawaz’s rendition of “Like a Prayer” did not meet the new eligibility standards based on information provided by the artist.
