Hamilton’s streets are set to transform into a vibrant stage this weekend as dancers from various parts of the region come together to honor hip-hop culture. The 73 ‘Til Infinity: Outdoor Dance Series was established in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, paying tribute to the year 1973, widely regarded as the birth of the genre.
Now in its fourth year, the event offers a range of attractions including dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle. Josh Taylor, the artistic director of Defining Movement Dance and the brains behind 73 ‘Til Infinity, described the event as a celebration of street dance culture.
The festivities kicked off on Tuesday, coinciding with hip-hop’s birthday, with free workshops on King William Street. A block party is scheduled for Friday, followed by a dance battle on Saturday. Taylor emphasized that the event aims to shine a spotlight on dancers, putting them at the forefront rather than as supporting acts.
Sisters Claris and Amelia Menjivar, longtime participants in 73 ‘Til Infinity, shared their passion for the event. Both sisters, who were introduced to dancing by their father, a dancer himself, now teach and choreograph at Defining Movement Dance. They have been actively involved in the production of multiple shows, including 73 ‘Til Infinity.
Claris emphasized that the weekend not only showcases dancers but also offers an opportunity for people to delve into the culture underpinning the art form. She highlighted the importance of understanding the history of hip-hop to truly engage with the culture, emphasizing its roots in Black and marginalized communities.
This weekend’s event will feature various street dance styles such as breaking, locking, popping, and waacking, which originated in 1970s Los Angeles among 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Claris stressed the significance of acknowledging the distinct styles within hip-hop culture and the need to appreciate its rich history of resilience and creativity.
The block party on Friday will showcase performances by dancers from Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area, starting at 7 p.m. The highlight of Saturday’s schedule is an all-styles, one-on-one dance battle commencing at 8 p.m. Participants will compete while improvising to live music spun by DJ English, with the winner taking home a cash prize.
Renowned street dancer Suga Pop, known for his contributions to the culture over many decades and as a former dance instructor to Michael Jackson, will serve as a judge for the battle. Suga Pop’s presence in Hamilton is seen as a significant moment within the dance community.
Despite being overshadowed at times by Toronto, Hamilton boasts a lively dance scene encompassing street dance, salsa, commercial hip-hop, and other genres. Taylor highlighted the supportive and close-knit nature of Hamilton’s dance community, emphasizing the camaraderie among dancers in the city.
73 ‘Til Infinity aims to showcase this sense of community and inclusivity, welcoming individuals of all dance backgrounds and experience levels to participate and engage with the rich culture of hip-hop. The event serves as a platform for anyone, from seasoned dancers to those simply curious about the culture, to come together, share experiences, and celebrate the art of dance.
