Canada’s women’s flag football team emerged victorious over the United States to claim the world title, while the men’s team secured their spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championships held in Düsseldorf, Germany. The women’s team, having secured a spot in the final with a 20-6 semifinal win against top-ranked Mexico, concluded a flawless tournament with a 27-20 triumph over the American team in the championship match.
Frederique Morneau made three touchdown receptions for Canada, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for Canada’s additional score. Parker, who completed a total of 23 touchdown passes, was honored as the most valuable player of the women’s tournament.
In the men’s competition, the Canadian team earned their place at the 2028 Olympics by defeating Mexico 34-26 in the third-place match. Quarterback Michael O’Connor led Canada with 294 yards and five touchdowns, with former NFL tight-end Antony Auclair contributing 149 receiving yards and securing two of O’Connor’s touchdown passes. Daniel Petermann scored two touchdowns, and James Drysdale added another.
The top two teams from each flag football event, excluding the American host team, secured qualification for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut as an Olympic sport. Although Canada was defeated by Italy in the men’s semifinals, their victory over Mexico in the third-place playoff secured their Olympic berth.
Canada’s head coach, Paul LaPolice, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, stating, “We came to the world championships with the goal of winning, and this team delivered.” LaPolice emphasized the dedication and hard work that led to Olympic qualification, praising the athletes’ performance under pressure.
The U.S. claimed victory over Italy in the men’s final with a score of 42-26, showcasing the competitive nature of the tournament. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Canadian flag football, with both the men’s and women’s teams securing qualification for the prestigious Olympics event.
