The recent developments in the Canada-U.S. trade dispute saw the White House imposing bans on Canadian dairy, motorcycles, and certain alcohol products, along with introducing fresh 50 percent tariffs on various other items. Economists suggest that while these measures may not significantly impact the overall Canadian economy, specific industries will bear the brunt, causing concern among business owners.
In response to Canada’s counter-tariffs, the White House escalated by implementing bans and additional tariffs, affecting around $3 billion worth of Canadian goods while removing tariffs on approximately $2 billion worth of products. Despite Canada’s substantial exports to the U.S. in 2025 amounting to over $527 billion, the difference in impact remains relatively minimal.
According to Derek Holt, vice president at Scotiabank, the bans on dairy, motorcycles, and alcohol are not expected to have a substantial effect as these sectors contribute a relatively small portion to U.S. exports. While alcohol exports to the U.S. totaled $550 million last year, the bans would only impact around $700 million worth of Canadian exports.
Both Holt and Doug Porter, chief economist at BMO, believe that the economic risk posed by rising oil prices, driven by tensions in the Middle East, outweighs the implications of the new U.S. tariffs. While the tariffs are estimated to affect around $2 billion worth of goods, the net impact remains unchanged from before the announcement.
Despite the limited direct impact by the numbers, analysts warn of the indirect consequences on business confidence due to the escalating trade tensions. The sudden implementation of some measures next week adds to uncertainties, giving businesses less time to adapt and potentially leading to disruptions on both sides of the border.
