The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has reported the apprehension of a minor in Montreal in relation to terrorism accusations. The RCMP disclosed in a recent statement that there are indications suggesting the “young man” had been devising a plan to target a school within the city.
Allegations include the use of artificial intelligence in potential attack planning and the dissemination of threatening messages on the platform Telegram, aimed at various groups such as Muslims, Haitians, and the 2SLGBTQ+ communities, as stated by RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Érique Gasse. Gasse mentioned that tips received from the FBI alerted them about the individual’s attack plans a few weeks ago.
The individual was taken into custody at his residence on Friday morning as part of an investigation conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team. This team comprises multiple agencies that monitor and disrupt criminal activities of terrorist entities or individuals posing threats to Canada’s national security.
Gasse informed that the individual is presently under interrogation while other investigators are searching his residence for electronic devices or any relevant evidence. The police operation was aimed at halting the individual’s suspected activities, and efforts are being made to secure a peace bond for monitoring and de-escalation measures.
It is anticipated that the individual will appear in youth court on Saturday morning, although the RCMP’s statement indicates that formal charges may follow at a later stage.
