“Vancouver SRO Tenants Mobilize to Beat Heatwave Risks”

During the 2021 heat dome in British Columbia, Stephen Nelson experienced the rapid and deadly impact of soaring temperatures firsthand. Nelson resided at the Keefer Rooms in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) when his neighbor, Mario, began struggling in the heat. Nelson and his girlfriend took care of Mario by opening windows, using a fan, and providing water. Tragically, Mario passed away during the heatwave due to the extreme temperatures exacerbating his existing health issues.

The Keefer Rooms, one of approximately 100 single-room occupancy buildings in Vancouver, lack adequate cooling infrastructure, making them susceptible to dangerous heat levels during heatwaves. A report from the B.C. Coroners Service revealed that 10% of the 619 deaths during the extreme heat crisis occurred in social housing, including SROs.

In response to the crisis, tenants in SRO buildings, like the Downtown Eastside SRO Collaborative Society, have mobilized to enhance safety measures during heatwaves. Teams of tenants monitor temperatures, distribute water, and operate cooling rooms to mitigate heat-related risks. These initiatives aim to address the challenges faced by vulnerable residents living in buildings ill-equipped for extreme temperatures.

Despite the shortcomings of Vancouver’s SRO buildings, they play a crucial role in providing affordable housing and preventing homelessness. Improving the living conditions in these buildings, such as installing heat pumps and enhancing cooling options, is essential to safeguarding the well-being of residents during heatwaves.

Community efforts, such as those led by Wendy Pedersen and tenant volunteers, highlight the importance of mutual support and collaboration in addressing climate-related housing challenges. By fostering a sense of community and implementing practical solutions, residents in SRO buildings are striving to create safer and more livable environments for all.
