Canada’s men and women have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships held in Germany. In the men’s category, Canada’s team faced a 37-28 defeat against Japan, finishing second in their group with a 2-1 record. Due to visa issues, their scheduled match against Nigeria was canceled, granting them an automatic win. The Japanese quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s former CFL quarterback, Michael O’Connor, managed three TD passes. The Canadian men are set to confront American Samoa in the quarterfinals after American Samoa’s victory over the top-ranked U.S. team.

On the other hand, the Canadian women secured the top spot in their group with a flawless 3-0 record following their 34-20 victory over Japan. They are scheduled to compete against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential semifinal against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker delivered an impressive performance, throwing four touchdown passes, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Other standout players for Canada included Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau.

Besides vying for the world title, the teams are also eyeing a chance to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers at the flag football world championships will secure Olympic spots as the sport makes its debut on the Olympic program.
