The Calgary Flames community mourns the loss of Peter Maher, the iconic voice behind the team’s radio broadcasts for over three decades. Maher, who passed away at the age of 79, began his tenure as the play-by-play commentator for the Flames in 1980 and remained a constant presence through 33 seasons. His memorable catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became synonymous with Flames games, particularly during pivotal moments like the team’s 1989 Stanley Cup win and their 2004 finals appearance.

Retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season, Maher left a lasting impact on Flames fans and the organization. The Flames expressed their condolences, acknowledging Maher’s enduring influence on the team and its supporters. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before making the move to Calgary when the Flames relocated from Atlanta.

Colleagues and fans alike remember Maher as a dedicated storyteller of Flames history. Rob Kerr, who worked alongside Maher, praised his commitment to delivering authentic and journalistic-based broadcasts, especially during times when radio was the primary medium for accessing Flames games. Maher’s meticulous approach to his craft was evident, as seen in his heartfelt calls like the famous “Yeah, baby!” moment during the 2004 playoff run.

Beyond his contributions to the Flames, Maher’s broadcasting career included calling NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics. His outstanding work earned him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, recognized with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for excellence in NHL broadcasting.

Following his retirement, Maher’s legacy continued to be honored, with the Scotiabank Saddledome naming its broadcast booth in his memory. Additionally, an annual award in Calgary, bearing Maher’s name, celebrates Flames players who embody virtues such as sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, reflecting Maher’s lasting impact on the team and the community.
