Stephen Bedingfield from Yellowknife, inspired by a total solar eclipse over Antarctica in 2003, has embarked on a quest to witness every eclipse possible. Accompanied by his wife, he has now reached Spain to witness his 13th total solar eclipse, which will be his 23rd eclipse overall, including partial ones. The event is anticipated to last approximately two minutes.
Bedingfield described the total solar eclipse as a breathtaking spectacle, comparing it to seeing iconic landmarks like the Great Barrier Reef, Niagara Falls, and Mount Everest simultaneously. While the upcoming total solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, northern Russia, and a portion of Portugal, Canada will only witness a partial solar eclipse where the moon partially covers the sun.
During his two-decade journey as an eclipse chaser, Bedingfield has connected with fellow enthusiasts and formed a close-knit community of eclipse chasers. He emphasized the unique experience of witnessing the alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth during an eclipse, describing it as a marvel of the solar system.
The eclipse chaser highlighted how the eclipse not only offers a visual spectacle but also brings about environmental changes, such as a rapid temperature drop and alterations in bird behavior. He emphasized that despite the short duration of the eclipse, the overall experience is transformative and awe-inspiring.
Christa Van Laerhoven, the vice president of the Yukon Astronomical Society, advised viewers in Yellowknife, Whitehorse, and Iqaluit to use proper eye protection when observing the partial eclipse. She recommended approved solar eclipse glasses or homemade alternatives like a pinhole projector made from common household items.
Van Laerhoven dispelled the misconception that the sun is more dangerous during an eclipse, emphasizing that looking at the sun is hazardous at all times. She warned against the temptation to directly view the sun during a partial eclipse, likening the phenomenon to observing a bright crescent resembling Pac-Man with a portion missing.
