“WestJet Faces Criticism Over Weight Limits on Wheelchairs”

WestJet has been accused of creating obstacles for travelers with disabilities by implementing a weight restriction that excludes certain power wheelchairs from its aircraft, according to Canada’s transportation authority. The Canadian Transportation Agency has ruled that WestJet must remove its 136-kilogram weight limit on mobility aids by July 2027.

In response to a complaint filed by Winnipeg resident Steven Fletcher, a former federal transport minister, the regulator has instructed WestJet to utilize “spreader plates” to evenly distribute the weight of wheelchairs in the cargo hold and to arrange alternative travel options with other airlines until the weight cap is lifted.

Advocates argue that the weight restriction has restricted air travel for individuals with disabilities and has led to discrimination. Fletcher criticized WestJet for alienating and excluding Canadians with disabilities due to an arbitrary weight limit that lacks justification.

WestJet declined to comment as the matter is still under review by the regulator. The agency is expected to make a final decision on the notice period required for passengers using mobility aids to inform the airline.

Last year, WestJet defended the weight limit as crucial for flight safety and compliance with accessibility regulations, citing a technical analysis that determined the weight threshold based on cargo hold capacity for its Boeing aircraft.

Advocates emphasize the significant impact on mobility for wheelchair users, noting that most airlines have more lenient restrictions. Cases like Fletcher’s and a 14-year-old girl from Saskatoon being denied travel due to wheelchair weight have highlighted the issue.

The weight cap imposed by WestJet is not consistent with other major North American airlines operating similar aircraft, according to experts. Despite safety concerns, some airlines have faced backlash for similar restrictions, prompting reconsideration.

Advocates stress the importance of accessibility in air travel for individuals with disabilities and call for better accommodation and service across the industry.
