The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood offers a unique blend of activities, from veterans enjoying drinks in the pub to yoga classes on the upper floor. Hannah, a 37-year-old regular, finds solace in the community and connection the Legion provides. Legions nationwide are making a concerted effort to attract a younger demographic, offering free memberships on the occasion of the Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary.

While still focused on supporting veterans and hosting traditional events, Legions like the Billy Bishop branch are embracing change to appeal to a broader audience. The Royal Canadian Legion has seen a significant increase in membership, with over 100,000 new members in 2026, totaling more than 300,000. Despite success stories, some branches have faced closures due to financial challenges.

Dennis Mills, President of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, recounted their struggle a decade ago when membership was dwindling. Through innovation and inclusivity, the branch has thrived, now offering affordable meals, concerts, and open-door policies. Looking ahead, the Bala Legion plans to transform its facility to include affordable rental units to ensure sustainability. Mills stressed the importance of attracting new members to maintain the Legion’s vitality and community service.
