Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and the U.S. Trade Representative are working on a joint proposal to potentially secure a trade deal with President Donald Trump. The aim is to present the proposal to Trump before the looming tariff deadline on August 19, which would impose 50 per cent levies on numerous Canadian imports.

LeBlanc recently met with the U.S. Trade Representative in Washington for the third time in as many weeks. The meeting was brief, lasting about an hour, and both parties have been tight-lipped about the details. Despite the lack of official statements, LeBlanc indicated ongoing discussions in a social media post.

In addition to averting new tariffs, the Canadian officials are seeking relief from existing sectoral tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber, and automobiles. Moreover, Canada is hopeful for an extension of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) after the Trump administration chose not to renew the deal in July.

The U.S. administration cited various trade issues, including Canada’s response to U.S. trade policies, as reasons for imposing the upcoming tariffs. These tariffs would impact a small portion of Canadian exports, ranging from alcohol to sports equipment. Conservative figures in Canada are pushing for a strong stance in negotiations with the U.S., emphasizing the need for a favorable trade agreement that benefits key Canadian industries.
