Severe wildfire seasons pose a significant public safety risk in Newfoundland and Labrador, impacting day-to-day activities in rural and remote regions, including essential geoscience work for the mining sector. These wildfires can render work areas inaccessible, leading to the reassignment of aircraft usually used for scientific fieldwork to aid in firefighting efforts. Minister Lloyd Parrott confirmed that despite challenges caused by wildfires, the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador’s work continues to progress.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador underspent on transportation for geophysical survey work in the previous year due to lower-than-expected helicopter usage, partly caused by wildfires. While scientists may utilize drones for certain tasks, helicopters remain vital for accessing remote areas, especially in Labrador.
Despite disruptions from wildfires, ongoing projects funded in collaboration with the federal government include data collection for rare earth elements in southeastern Labrador and a geophysical survey in the White Bay area. The Geological Survey currently has ten active field projects, with a focus on both Newfoundland and Labrador regions.
Although wildfires have impacted helicopter travel for geoscience work, the province is experiencing record-high levels of private investment in exploration activities. Amanda McCallum, Executive Director of Mining Industry N.L., emphasized the importance of public geoscience in driving investments, de-risking projects, and accelerating discoveries.
Private sector industries are adapting to wildfire-related disruptions, adjusting field seasons without halting projects entirely. Mining remains a significant contributor to the province’s GDP, employing thousands of individuals across various mining operations.
As of the latest report, the wildfire risk level in Newfoundland and Labrador is low, with a reduced number of fires compared to the previous year but a larger total area burned. Despite challenges, the mining sector continues to navigate through these obstacles, showcasing resilience and adaptability.
