A British tourist tragically lost his life in Cape Verde after a violent altercation involving ten locals. Dean Taylor, a 25-year-old sales worker from south-east London, passed away on January 7 while en route to a local hospital following the incident in Santa Maria on Sal Island. Authorities have apprehended five men in connection with the fatal confrontation.
According to police reports, Taylor was involved in a dispute with a group of around ten Cape Verdean individuals, during which he was subjected to chair strikes, punches, and kicks. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack. Dean’s father, Alexander Taylor, expressed profound grief, stating that the family is devastated by the loss.
Five men, aged between 19 and 35, have been detained by the country’s Judicial Police following the tragic event. The police statement revealed that the altercation occurred in the early hours of January 7 on a pedestrian street in Santa Maria. Dean, originally identified as an Irish citizen, was later confirmed to be a British national by the Foreign Office.
Alexander recounted that Dean had traveled to Cape Verde with three school friends on December 28, planning to depart the day after the incident. He warned potential visitors to Cape Verde to be cautious, emphasizing the need to be vigilant while holidaying in the region. The family faced financial burdens to repatriate Dean’s body, as his travel insurance did not cover the expenses.
As the family awaits the repatriation of Dean’s remains, they are yet to organize his funeral. The Foreign Office affirmed its support for the bereaved family and its engagement with local authorities in Cape Verde.
