Labour’s Angela Rayner is set to caution party leaders against obstructing Andy Burnham’s bid to become an MP. Rayner, the former Deputy Leader, is reportedly in favor of Burnham’s return to Parliament and is expected to advocate for members’ right to decide in a speech to party supporters. Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and a potential Labour leader, will soon determine whether to contest an upcoming by-election following the resignation of MP Andrew Gwynne. Gwynne stepped down due to health reasons after facing controversy over inappropriate WhatsApp messages. Burnham, a perceived challenger to Keir Starmer, may seek candidacy pending approval from Labour’s national executive committee, which is largely supportive of Starmer. Several MPs have publicly urged party officials not to impede Burnham’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of local input in the selection process. Trade union leaders have also expressed support for a democratic and inclusive candidate selection process in Gorton & Denton. Health Minister Stephen Kinnock praised Burnham’s leadership in Greater Manchester and affirmed that candidate selection will occur in accordance with party regulations. The Labour Party has clarified that no candidates have formally declared their intention to run, and the selection process will adhere to established guidelines.
