Burnham, a perceived challenger to Keir Starmer, may seek candidacy pending approval from Labour’s national executive committee, which is largely supportive of Starmer. Several MPs have publicly urged party officials not to impede Burnham’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of local input in the selection process. Trade union leaders have also expressed support for a democratic and inclusive candidate selection process in Gorton & Denton. Health Minister Stephen Kinnock praised Burnham’s leadership in Greater Manchester and affirmed that candidate selection will occur in accordance with party regulations.
