Six individuals sustained injuries, with two in critical condition, after a knife attack occurred at a prominent tourist destination.
The incident took place in Antwerp, Belgium, during a pro-Kurdish rally near the bustling Operaplein square. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended two suspects shortly after the assault. A spokesperson stated, “Four individuals were wounded this evening at Operaplein, all sustaining stab wounds.
“All victims were stabbed, and two are currently in critical condition. Emergency medical services promptly arrived with multiple teams to administer initial aid. Two suspects have been taken into custody.”
Reports indicate that four of the injured individuals were located at Operaplein, while the fifth and sixth victims were found near Rooseveltplaats and Sint-Elisabethstraat.
Witnesses observed police officers subduing a suspect on the ground before making an arrest. Approximately 50 demonstrators were present at the rally, with law enforcement already on site. Attendees noted that the protest had been peaceful for the majority of the evening.
According to one witness, “People were fleeing in different directions; it was complete chaos.” Another bystander mentioned that a group passing by suddenly brandished knives and began attacking individuals seated on the building steps.
The attack occurred as the rally was concluding around 7:30 pm.
Footage captured from a nearby building depicts emergency services rushing to the scene as terrified locals scream. Another video circulating on social media shows a victim receiving medical attention on the ground.
Wouter Bruyns, a spokesperson for the Antwerp Police Zone, informed DeMorgen that law enforcement successfully apprehended the two suspects who had blended in with the demonstrators. Kurdish and PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) flags were visible during the protest.
A police inquiry has been initiated, with forensic experts present at the square. Authorities have advised the public to vacate the area and avoid lingering at Operaplein.
