The family of a British student facing a distressing situation after he disappeared during a hiking trip has shared an unfortunate update regarding their “loss.”
George Smyth, an 18-year-old student at the University of Bristol, went missing in a mountainous area near Dracula’s castle in Romania on November 23. His last known location was near the Tiganesti Valley, a remote spot at an elevation of 6,562 feet, where he contacted emergency services reporting exhaustion and symptoms of hypothermia.
Despite extensive search efforts by rescue teams in challenging weather conditions, George, originally from Newport, Shropshire, remains unaccounted for. The search has been temporarily halted due to the high risk of avalanches in the region.
In a statement released through the rugby club George was associated with, Newport Salop RUFC, his family expressed their profound sorrow and paid tribute to him. They described George as a remarkably compassionate and devoted individual, known for his loyalty, vitality, and enthusiasm, emphasizing the impact he had in his short life.
According to authorities in Romania, George planned to hike from Poiana Brasov to the village of Bran, famous for Dracula’s residence at Bran Castle.
