A distressing discovery was made at a three-bedroom semi-detached property where a puppy farm was found housing nearly 40 dogs in deplorable conditions. The house, covered in excrement and urine, left police officers and council workers feeling physically ill.
Turan Kiran, 48, was living in the filthy residence with 38 dogs suffering from various health issues due to the property being saturated with urine and feces. Among the dogs, Cetin Kiral, 34, was responsible for one animal that was in poor health from being covered in excrement and urine.
The investigation unfolded when police responded to a call reporting a foul odor resembling a decomposing body emanating from the Cardiff property on March 19, 2023. Upon arrival, officers were met with intense barking and a strong stench of excrement from inside the house.
Attempts to enter the house were initially resisted, but Kiran eventually allowed officers inside, claiming there were only a couple of dogs present. However, the overpowering smell of dog excrement and urine forced the officers to retreat momentarily.
Inside the property, officers found 15 young dogs, mostly French bulldogs, cramped in the living room. The scene was described as horrid, with feces smeared on walls and floors, creating a nauseating environment for both humans and animals.
The dire conditions extended to other areas of the house, with clothing soaked in urine, an armchair shredded, and scratch marks on the walls. Additional dogs were discovered in the kitchen, and four dead puppies were found in a freezer alongside dog food.
A total of 38 dogs were rescued from the property, leading to the arrest of Kiran. The distressing scene caused physical discomfort to council workers and a veterinary surgeon present, with one dog going into labor during the operation.
Kiran admitted to causing suffering to 17 protected animals, while Kiral pleaded guilty to one count. The court learned that Kiral owned five of the microchipped dogs found on the property, one of which had visible health issues.
During the sentencing, Kiran received an 18-week suspended prison term, a rehabilitation activity requirement, and unpaid work hours. Kiral was sentenced to nine weeks in prison, a similar rehabilitation program, unpaid work, and was ordered to repay the profits from the operation along with court costs.
