Petrol prices in the UK are on the rise due to concerns about the impact of the ongoing conflict in Iran on fuel costs. A new interactive map has been released to show the average prices per region and highlight the most affordable places to refuel nearby.
The price of crude oil has surged above $100 per barrel as the US and Israeli actions in Iran continue to unsettle global markets. In response, the average petrol price in the UK has climbed to 137p per litre, marking an increase of nearly 6p per litre since the conflict began nine days ago.
Experts are cautioning that if crude oil prices remain high, British drivers should anticipate further price hikes. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit has pointed out that sustained oil trading at $100 per barrel could push petrol prices up to around 150p per litre, while hitting $120 per barrel could result in petrol prices reaching about 170p per litre in the UK.
Across the UK, petrol prices vary significantly depending on the location. In Northern Ireland, prices are notably lower than the national average, with Belfast’s forecourts offering standard unleaded petrol at an average of 125.8p per litre.
The most expensive areas for refueling include North Warwickshire, Maidstone, Breckland, and Brentwood, where average petrol prices exceed 141p per litre. However, each of these areas also has cheaper filling stations where prices are closer to the national average.
For motorists seeking the best deals, the United Kingdom’s cheapest place to refuel is an ASDA garage in County Durham. By filling up at this location, drivers of an average family car could save up to £24 compared to the most expensive petrol station.
At the ASDA garage on South Church Road in County Durham, petrol is priced at 127.7p per litre, translating to a total cost of £70 to fill up a standard 55-litre tank. On the contrary, the most expensive filling station in the UK is an ASDA station on the M74 Southbound in South Lanarkshire, where standard petrol is priced at 171.9p per litre, costing £95 to fill up an average family car.
Diesel prices have seen a faster increase than unleaded petrol, rising by approximately 9p per litre since the start of the Iran conflict on February 28th. For diesel car owners, the most economical refueling option is an ASDA garage in Kingswood, Hull, where standard diesel is priced at 134.9p per litre.
The prices mentioned are based on retailer data as of March 9th, 2026, at 4:45 am.
