Mikey bid his mother farewell with a heartfelt “Love you mum” over the phone before heading to a house party in Bath, Somerset, with his teenage friends on a summer evening in June. His mother, Hayley, had a work event in Birmingham but left money for him and promised to catch up soon.
After her work function, Hayley turned on her phone to find over 30 missed calls from Mikey’s phone and friends, leading to her worst fear. Arriving at the house where the fatal stabbing occurred, she struggled to accept that her son had been fatally stabbed.
On June 10, 2023, Avon and Somerset Police responded to reports of a stabbing at a house party in Bath, resulting in the tragic death of 16-year-old Mikey Roynon from Bristol. Mikey, known for his musical talent, had no criminal background but was aware of the rising knife crime in the area.
Following investigations, the police detained 16-year-old Shane Cunningham and two others, who pleaded not guilty. Despite claims of self-defense during court proceedings, the police believe Mikey was an innocent victim in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Mikey suffered a fatal stab wound with a zombie knife, leading to minimal chances of survival. While two boys were initially found guilty of manslaughter, their convictions were overturned. Shane Cunningham was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, sparking disbelief and anguish from Mikey’s mother, Hayley.
