A new dispute is brewing concerning Shamima Begum as reports suggest she might soon be released from a detention camp in Syria.

The 26-year-old former ISIS bride from London is making a fresh plea to return to the UK after being stripped of her British citizenship in 2019. Despite her legal team arguing that she was manipulated and exploited at the age of 15, the UK government is resolute in opposing her re-entry.

The European Court of Human Rights has pressed Britain for explanations regarding the contentious decision to revoke Begum’s citizenship. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering stance, citing that all legal avenues have been exhausted up to the UK Supreme Court, and they will vigorously defend the case at the European Court of Human Rights.

Uncertainty looms over Begum’s future destination as the Syrian government reaches a truce with the Syrian Democratic Forces, gaining control of the region. She is believed to be currently situated in the al-Roj camp in northern Syria along with other British nationals.

Former Tory attorney general Dominic Grieve asserts that Begum remains the responsibility of the UK. Meanwhile, both former Tory Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Labour peer Alf Dubs, who fled the Nazis as a child, have criticized the decision to revoke her citizenship.

In Strasbourg, judges have inquired whether the UK government should have considered Begum as a victim of trafficking. Lawyer Gareth Peirce highlights the failures to protect a vulnerable 15-year-old from being exploited by ISIS in 2014/15, emphasizing the government’s oversight on grooming and trafficking issues.

Begum, now 26, journeyed to Syria in 2015 with two school friends, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana, who have since been reported deceased.
