Calls for a boycott of the upcoming men’s football World Cup in the US have intensified following Donald Trump’s controversial attempts to purchase Greenland. Pressure has been mounting on Keir Starmer, with MPs urging him to take action against the US President’s threats of tariffs on the UK.
Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, starting in February in response to opposition to his Greenland acquisition bid. Additionally, he threatened to raise tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if a deal for Greenland is not secured.
Amidst these developments, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs have suggested that England, Scotland, and other qualifying home nations boycott the World Cup in protest against Trump. The idea of canceling the King’s planned state visit to the US has also been floated.
Trump further escalated tensions by criticizing Britain’s Chagos deal, calling it an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY” and a “total weakness” that could be exploited by countries like China and Russia. The ongoing dispute has prompted discussions in the House of Commons on how to address Trump’s actions effectively.
MPs highlighted the need to understand Trump’s motivations, emphasizing his thin-skinned nature and the importance of challenging his pride. They questioned the feasibility of the state visit and participation in the World Cup as means to exert pressure on the US President.
The World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 11, with Scotland and England gearing up for their matches. Scotland’s games will be held in Massachusetts and Florida, while England’s group stage fixtures are set to take place in Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
