“Enormous vape kits with the puffing capacity equivalent to more than 8,000 cigarettes should be prohibited in the UK, according to a prominent Member of Parliament.”
Dr. Beccy Cooper, a Labour MP and public health expert, is urging for the Tobacco & Vapes Bill to address legal loopholes allowing the sale of 100,000-puff vape bundles in the UK market. The popularity of these kits has risen notably since the government’s ban on disposable vapes last June.
Speaking to The Mirror, Dr. Cooper emphasized that these “monster vapes” contradict the ban on disposable vapes and current tank size restrictions, posing significant public health risks. She stressed the need for regulatory enforcement to prevent the availability of such high-puff products in the UK.
Campaigners have raised concerns about manufacturers exploiting regulations by incorporating multiple 2ml tanks in a single vape device. Before the disposable vape ban, studies showed a substantial market share for mega-puff devices, accounting for millions of sales weekly.
Material Focus, an advocate for circular economies, has cautioned about the cost-effectiveness of “big puff” vapes compared to disposable options, highlighting environmental concerns. Despite meeting reusable standards, the 100,000-puff vape kits have sparked debates on user behavior and the effectiveness of the disposable vape ban.
While vaping has been promoted as a smoking cessation aid, health experts advise caution due to unknown long-term effects. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, currently under review in the House of Lords, aims to restrict cigarette purchases for individuals born after January 1, 2009.
As vaping products continue to evolve, the debate over regulation and public health implications remains ongoing.
