Britons should prepare for additional snowfall as a massive 656-mile snowstorm, stretching from London to just south of John O’Groats, is expected to hit the UK by the end of January. Weather forecasts indicate a significant snow band moving east over Bulgaria and Hungary on January 30, with wintry conditions anticipated to reach the UK by 6 am the following day. Most of the UK is likely to wake up to severe weather on Saturday, January 31, with Cornwall and Northern Ireland being the only regions predicted to avoid snowfall.

Temperatures are projected to drop to -5°C in certain parts of the country, while Europe braces for even colder weather. The maps show a vast expanse of snow covering areas from Essex to Pembrokeshire, engulfing Wales, most of England, and the majority of Scotland. Snow is expected to start settling over northern England and Scotland by midday, with a lower probability of snow in the southern regions.

Southern England is set to experience bitter cold, with temperatures dropping to -3°C in the Cotswolds by 6 am on Saturday, potentially leading to icy road conditions. The Midlands may see temperatures rise above freezing, while the north could experience temperatures as low as -2°C. Rural parts of Scotland could witness temperatures plummeting to -5°C, with cities like Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow hovering around freezing. Wales and Northern Ireland are likely to see varying temperatures, with Northern Ireland expecting rain instead of snow.

The Met Office acknowledges the challenges of predicting snowfall but has indicated the likelihood of cold weather and potential snow in the extended forecast for the next four weeks. The forecast suggests a battle between Atlantic weather systems from the west and high pressure with colder conditions from the east. As we move towards early February, there is a growing possibility of colder conditions and wintry hazards. Looking ahead to early February, the Met Office warns of cold conditions affecting the UK and the risk of wintry weather.

In summary, the forecast suggests a transition to unsettled conditions and a return to average temperatures as we head deeper into February.
