A former participant of the reality TV show “Love Island” has been taken into custody on suspicion of various offenses, including sexual assault, which reportedly occurred towards the end of last year.

The individual, aged in their 20s, has been released on bail while further investigations are conducted. The person, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended at Gatwick Airport on Thursday, November 27, following an inquiry initiated by the Metropolitan Police on November 15. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police informed the Mirror that a 29-year-old individual was arrested on allegations of sexual assault, stalking, criminal damage, and assault as part of an ongoing probe by the Metropolitan Police officers.

The source disclosed to The Sun: “These extremely grave accusations are the last thing the show and ITV need, given the challenges Love Island has encountered previously. Network executives will ensure that this individual is kept away from the show and any association with ITV if these claims are substantiated.”

The source further stated, “We understand that law enforcement is treating this matter with utmost seriousness.” This development comes shortly after ITV faced obstacles in airing the third season of Love Island: All Stars due to wildfires near the filming location in South Africa.

The ongoing police investigation is part of a series of unfortunate incidents that have cast a shadow over the contentious dating show. Notably, Jack Fincham, the winner of season four in 2018, recently revealed financial struggles and an inability to afford rehab due to substance abuse issues.

Tragedies have also struck former contestants of the show, with the suicides of Sophie Gradon in 2018 and Mike Thalassitis in 2019, both of whom had participated in earlier seasons. Additionally, Caroline Flack, the former host of the show, died by suicide in February 2020, raising concerns about the level of support provided by ITV to contestants thrust into the limelight.

In response to these incidents, ITV has implemented improved duty of care measures to assist participants before, during, and after their time on the show. Former contestants have commended ITV for enhancing the support provided to individuals navigating life in the villa and in the public eye.

Notable individuals from the show have spoken out about the impact of social media and public scrutiny. Amy Hart, a contestant from season five in 2019, highlighted the challenges faced by her loved ones due to online harassment. Season eight star Tasha Ghouri expressed support for the enhanced support measures, noting a decrease in negative online behavior.

For individuals affected by sexual assault, resources and assistance can be accessed through organizations like Rape Crisis. Similarly, those in need of support can reach out to the Samaritans or the Suzy Lamplugh Trust for help and guidance.
