Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league star Rob Burrow, has passed away. Geoff played a significant role in the fundraising efforts that followed Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos expressed their sorrow in a statement, revealing that Geoff Burrow passed away on March 30th after battling illness. A native of Leeds, Geoff tirelessly supported the MND community following Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his advocacy even after Rob’s passing in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to rugby at Headingley, sparking his passion for the sport. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed the causes of those without a voice.
The club extended heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s wife, Irene, and the Burrow family during this difficult time, urging respect for their privacy. Leeds legend Rob Burrow, who succumbed to MND in 2024, was dedicated to raising awareness for the disease, supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield.
Together, they established the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. Geoff expressed gratitude for the community’s fundraising efforts, emphasizing the center’s importance for MND patients and the exceptional staff.
Geoff played a vital role in caring for Rob and their children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing, Geoff shared the family’s final moments with gratitude and love.
