The latest scratchings stage for the Grand National has resulted in the removal of ten horses from contention, leaving a field of 34 for the upcoming race at Aintree. National Hunt enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the £1 million National event, which is less than a month away and will challenge the top staying chasers with a grueling four-mile, two-and-a-half furlong course featuring 30 fences.
Since 2024, the field size for the National has been set at 34 horses, down from 40, giving us a glimpse of the potential lineup for the race scheduled for April 11. At the most recent scratchings stage, a total of ten horses were withdrawn, with three pulled before Tuesday, including notable competitors like Grey Dawning, Resplendent Grey, and Gentlemansgame.
Subsequently, seven more horses have been removed, such as Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, Search For Glory, Handstands, Pic Roc, and Leave of Absence. The final field of 34 contenders is now led by Willie Mullins’ duo consisting of 2024 winner I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West, the victor of the Bobbyjo Chase who finished third last year.
As the race approaches, it is possible that more horses will be withdrawn, with some opting to participate in the Irish National on April 6 instead. Oscars Brother is currently the favorite for that event. Among the British hopefuls is Haiti Couleurs, a winner of the Welsh and Irish Nationals, who may compete at Aintree following a recent appearance at the Gold Cup in Cheltenham.
Trainer Rebecca Curtis expressed her excitement about Haiti Couleurs’ potential participation in the National, emphasizing his strength in such races. She indicated that if the horse remains in good condition in the following weeks, there is a strong possibility of him competing at Aintree. Curtis highlighted the similarities to the previous year when the horse ran in both Cheltenham and the Irish National, affirming her confidence in his ability to perform well at Aintree.
