Co-op is set to launch innovative “flexi checkouts” in their stores to reduce wait times for customers. These smart tills can switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference, aiming to enhance convenience and efficiency.
Supplied by American technology company Diebold Nixdorf, these new checkouts will be deployed in 150 Co-op stores by April. In addition to the flexibility of switching modes, the screens will display price discounts, special offers, and promotions. There are plans to utilize them for parcel collections in the future, making Co-op the first supermarket in the UK to employ this technology.
David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support centre, and innovation, emphasized the company’s dedication to creating local stores that cater to community needs. The initiative aims to strike a balance between customer interaction with staff and swift transactions to ensure an enjoyable shopping experience for all.
Furthermore, Co-op announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store, situated in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, signifies the beginning of Co-op’s expansion plans. Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the stores’ focus on quality products, member value, and attractive promotions to meet customer demands.
Co-op also revealed its commitment to generating thousands of new apprenticeships by 2030, with a £70 million investment through its Levy Share program. This initiative aims to create 7,000 apprenticeships to support skill development and employment opportunities.
