A school principal tragically took her own life after enduring relentless homophobic harassment in a small village. Caroline Grandjean, aged 42, faced torment from unknown culprits for years in Moussages, central France. Despite reaching out to a suicide helpline for help, she ended her life the same day. Her spouse, Christine Paccoud, expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing Caroline’s dedication to teaching and the unwarranted external pressure she faced.
Caroline had been on sick leave since 2023 due to the abuse she encountered in the village. According to her partner, she felt abandoned by her superiors and lacked necessary support. The village, with a population of around 300, witnessed a decline in Caroline’s well-being after she discovered homophobic graffiti on the school premises in December 2023.
The hateful acts escalated, leading Caroline to stay away from work at the start of the school year in September 2024. Despite her absence, the issue remained unresolved, causing distress for Caroline. Tragically, on September 1, she contacted a suicide helpline before her lifeless body was discovered near her residence in Anglards-de-Salers, central France.
Christine hopes that Caroline’s story will shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, not only in France but globally. She highlighted the promising career prospects Caroline had before being shattered by relentless bullying. The devastating incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing such acts of discrimination and hate.
