A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos for homes seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees. Offering similar features to Sky’s premium service, the S4-R allows users to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.

The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its cost-effectiveness. Unlike Sky Q, which mandates monthly payments, the S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any ongoing fees after the initial purchase. This device operates with Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to TVs, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, and others.

Designed with a user-friendly interface, the S4-R offers built-in search functionalities and access to a vast library of on-demand entertainment, totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.

While not focusing on premium sports and movies like Sky Q, Freesat’s advantage lies in its free-to-watch model. The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is currently available at £219.99 from retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected soon. High demand is evident, as Argos lists the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted that the S4-R enhances recording capabilities by allowing up to four simultaneous recordings, compared to the previous two-channel limit. Ideal for households seeking an affordable alternative to subscription TV services, the S4-R offers enhanced flexibility and choice.

Another disruptor in the TV market is the Pleio puck, which offers freely streaming access to TVs without the need for an aerial. Priced at £99.99, the Pleio puck includes a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.

Sky, in preparation for the upcoming World Cup, has announced a 20% price reduction for the Sky Glass Air TV, starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect prices starting at £11 per month.
