A donor affiliated with the Labour Party has taken preemptive action against potential government measures to restrict children’s access to social media.
Dale Vince, a vocal figure, criticized tech titans Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he described as unrestricted influence over young users. In response to parents’ top concern, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a mobile plan that enables children to make unlimited calls and texts without internet access.
The wealthy entrepreneur argued that a traditional phone plan is necessary due to the harmful content children are exposed to, urging government officials to take action. This move comes as there is mounting pressure on the government to prohibit individuals under the age of 16 from using social media platforms.
Recently, over 60 Labour MPs urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead, which implemented a ban in December. Mr. Starmer has not ruled out implementing a similar ban, stating that all options are being considered.
One of Mr. Vince’s ventures, Ecotalk, has launched a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting at £4 per month. Unlike most plans available, this option does not provide internet access.
Mr. Vince emphasized the importance of providing a phone option that does not expose children to the unregulated content found online. He expressed concerns about irresponsible tech platforms and their impact on young people, highlighting the need for immediate action through initiatives like the kids SIM offered by Ecotalk.
Established in 2018 by Mr. Vince, Ecotalk collaborates with ecologist Chris Packham to support land restoration and rewilding projects in Sussex and Devon.
