James Bulger’s father has pledged to oppose Jon Venables’ latest attempt for release, as the individual responsible for his son’s death seeks parole. Venables, now 43, committed the heinous act of torturing and murdering young Bulger at the age of 10 alongside accomplice Robert Thompson, following the abduction of the two-year-old from a shopping center in Bootle, Merseyside in 1993. Both offenders were initially sentenced to juvenile detention with indefinite terms, later transitioning to adult prisons where they have remained for the past two decades.

Venables, who has had a history of imprisonment, is now on the brink of potential release pending a forthcoming Parole Board session, a move fiercely contested by Ralph Bulger. In an interview with The Sun, Mr. Bulger expressed his intent to attend the hearing, scheduled for an undisclosed date this year, to hear Venables’ statements. He vowed to stand up for his late son, seeking justice and showing defiance against Venables.

While preparing to confront his son’s killer, the father described the emotional turmoil evoked by Venables’ repeated bids for freedom as “excruciating.” He highlighted the anguish of facing these parole attempts around the anniversary of James’ tragic death, emphasizing the relentless pain caused by the offender’s actions. Mr. Bulger stressed his determination to prevent Venables from being released, fearing the potential harm he could inflict on other children.

Venables has made multiple parole attempts since his initial incarceration in 1993, with several instances of recall due to possessing child pornography. His most recent parole application in 2023 was rejected by the board, citing concerns about the risk he poses to children if released. The decision emphasized the necessity for Venables to address outstanding risks and improve his relationship with his probation officer before any potential release is considered.
