Russian assaults on Ukraine’s power infrastructure reveal a deep animosity towards Ukraine, casting doubt on the possibility of a viable peace agreement.
The absence of a coherent military strategy beyond deploying successive waves of Russian troops and making slow advancements is accompanied by a misguided focus on targeting Ukrainian civilians.
Throughout nearly four years of resisting this abhorrent full-scale invasion, Ukrainian civilians have demonstrated remarkable resilience, bravely facing harsh winter conditions and enduring heating shortages, yet remaining resolute against Putin’s offensives.
From a strategic standpoint, the practice of attacking civilian resources with expensive missiles and drones proves futile as it fails to break Ukrainian resolve. This underscores Russian President Vladimir Putin’s callous disregard for any commitments he makes regarding the conflict in Ukraine, particularly to President Donald Trump.
Trump had stated that Putin had agreed to refrain from targeting Kyiv’s energy supplies by exploiting severe winter temperatures to undermine civilian morale. However, the so-called temporary cessation of such attacks, brokered and promised to President Trump, was merely delaying the inevitable.
By postponing attacks, as purportedly agreed with Trump, Putin was essentially deferring the inevitable, launching a ruthless assault, one of the largest in recent weeks, on Ukraine. Putin has been buying time, allowing for the pause, consistently delaying peace negotiations, but his options are dwindling.
Expectations are now set on further discussions in Abu Dhabi, but in a display of intimidation and projection of power, Putin could not resist attempting to assert dominance. However, last night’s assault is unlikely to advance Putin’s strategic goals in winning the war, although he may seek to impress Trump’s negotiating team with a false impression of victory.
It signifies a sense of desperation and disrespect towards US President Donald Trump, who has been subjected to daily ridicule by the Kremlin’s deceit, placing Kyiv in a dire predicament, almost an existential crossroads.
The choice now lies in unequivocally denouncing Washington’s misguided belief in Putin’s falsehoods and stalling tactics as his troops make sluggish progress on the frontlines.
Alternatively, Kyiv can opt to continue stalling in the hope that Ukraine’s forces can hold their ground, despite being outnumbered and underequipped, showcasing remarkable resourcefulness and valor on the battlefield.
Volodymyr Zelensky can only hope for increased support from Europe, a breakthrough, or a significant event that compels Washington to finally abandon its misguided indifference towards the Kremlin’s quest for supremacy over Kyiv.
