Apple’s AirTags, small tracking devices equipped with advanced technology, have proven to be versatile tools for their owners. These gadgets can assist in finding misplaced items like wallets, aid in locating vehicles in large parking lots when placed in the car’s glove compartment, and even be attached to pets’ collars for tracking purposes.

During a recent trip from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles, frequent traveler Daniel Scott discreetly placed one of these £30 AirTags in his luggage. However, upon arrival at LAX, a mix-up by baggage handlers led to passengers from his flight being directed to the wrong baggage carousel.

After realizing the error, Daniel found himself at the incorrect carousel with no sight of his luggage. Quick to act, he used the ‘Find My’ app on his mobile device to trace the AirTag signal, discovering that his belongings were moving away from the terminal towards a taxi rank outside the airport.

Daniel swiftly pursued the signal and managed to keep pace with it as it led him to a deserted structure about half a mile away. Simultaneously, his partner alerted the authorities about the theft.

Remaining outside the building, Daniel continued tracking the AirTag’s location until the police arrived. With their arrival, a dramatic scene unfolded as officers illuminated the building with their torches, prompting the culprits inside to reveal themselves.

To his surprise, Daniel spotted a person wearing his clothes through a window, leading to the arrest of multiple individuals at the location. Once the area was secured, Daniel was permitted to enter the building to search for his torn-apart luggage and scattered belongings.

Despite the chaotic situation, Daniel expressed relief at recovering most of his possessions. He emphasized the importance of waiting for law enforcement rather than confronting criminals directly in similar incidents.

Reflecting on the experience, Daniel described it as “insane” but expressed gratitude for the successful retrieval of his belongings.
