A woman confessed to police after being arrested for living with her deceased parents’ bodies for four years. Virginia McCullough admitted to sealing her mother’s body in a wardrobe due to maggots and flies appearing soon after the murder. Detective Simon Dinsdale highlighted the complexity of disposing of dead bodies and noted McCullough’s sophisticated methods of concealing the bodies.
McCullough constructed an elaborate structure to hide her father’s body in their shared house in Great Baddow, Essex, using the excuse of building a garden wall. The documentary “How I Murdered Mum & Dad: The Virginia McCullough Confessions” revealed how she covered her father’s tomb with blankets and paintings. In contrast, she moved her mother’s body to a wardrobe the next day and sealed it to prevent insect infestation.
Initially attempting to poison her parents, McCullough succeeded in killing her father with sedatives in his wine. Her mother survived the poisoning but was later killed with a hammer and multiple stabbings. The police expressed shock at McCullough’s actions and the emotional toll it must have taken on her.
Upon her arrest, McCullough divulged the details of her parents’ murders, revealing her financial exploitation of their pensions and credit cards amounting to £150,000. She also spent a significant sum on online gambling. McCullough cited a history of neglect and abuse from her parents as a motive for her crimes.
Known for her eccentric behavior, McCullough fabricated stories and faced police warnings for repeated complaints. Despite maintaining false narratives about her parents’ whereabouts, suspicions arose when they missed appointments, leading to her arrest in October 2024. McCullough received a life sentence for the murders, with a minimum term of 36 years in prison.
