Canada supported winger Tom Wilson as he engaged in a physical altercation to defend a teammate during their decisive victory over France at the Winter Olympics. Wilson’s decision to challenge a French opponent sparked a brief scuffle in an otherwise lopsided 10-2 win for Canada.

Although fighting is not typically encouraged in the Winter Olympics, Wilson, a seasoned player for the Washington Capitals, felt compelled to confront Pierre Crinon of France. The altercation was triggered by Crinon’s aggressive hit on Nathan MacKinnon, which resulted in a penalty for the French player and a subsequent powerplay goal for Canada.

Despite knowing that his actions would lead to his ejection from the game, Wilson shed his gloves and engaged Crinon in a physical confrontation. Both players were subsequently removed from the game due to fighting penalties issued by the International Ice Hockey Federation.

The Canadian team, already secure in their victory and advancing to the elimination stage of the ice hockey competition, applauded Wilson’s protective instincts. Teammates praised Wilson for standing up for his fellow players, with star Connor McDavid commending his defensive actions.

While fighting is not a common occurrence in Olympic ice hockey, Wilson’s willingness to defend his teammates resonated well within the Canadian team. The team expressed gratitude for Wilson’s commitment to team unity and his willingness to protect his fellow players.

Canada’s head coach, Jon Cooper, downplayed the incident, emphasizing the importance of players looking out for each other on the ice. Goaltender Jordan Binnington echoed the sentiment, stating that such actions are part and parcel of the sport.
