The Bank of England has unveiled various new banknote designs submitted by the public. Seeking input for the most extensive redesign in half a century, the central bank has received numerous suggestions, including a dolphin, the Sycamore Gap tree, and the Angel of the North sculpture in Gateshead. According to reports, thousands of responses have flooded the Bank of England.

Victoria Cleland, the chief cashier at the Bank of England, highlighted the significant interest and involvement, especially from young individuals. She emphasized the importance of banknotes as a means to honor the UK and its achievements. The final selection of the new banknote designs will be authorized by Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey.

Previously, the Bank of England outlined six potential themes for the upcoming banknotes, encompassing historical figures, architectural marvels, arts, culture, notable historical events, innovation, and nature. Additionally, the public can propose alternative themes for consideration, potentially leading to further public feedback on specific imagery reflecting the chosen theme.

The upcoming series of banknotes will retain a portrait of King Charles, excluding representations of any living person. Currently, there are over 4.7 billion Bank of England notes in circulation, with a combined value of approximately £86 billion.

Since 2016, the Bank of England has introduced polymer banknotes featuring advanced security features like see-through windows and holograms to enhance counterfeit protection. Notably, Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner, and Alan Turing are depicted on the £5, £10, £20, and £50 banknotes, respectively.

The first note in the current “G” series was the £5 released in September 2016, followed by the £10 in September 2017, the £20 in February 2020, and the £50 note in June 2021. Ms. Cleland emphasized that banknotes symbolize the national identity and serve as a means to celebrate the UK. The public consultation for theme suggestions will conclude on July 31.
