Frankie Dettori officially retired from horse racing after achieving a major victory in Brazil by winning the first leg of the nation’s Triple Crown. Initially planning to retire during Champions Day at Ascot in October 2023, Dettori changed his mind and extended his career in the United States.
The 55-year-old jockey announced last November that he would conclude his career at the Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar, following a brief farewell tour in South America that concluded at Gavea racecourse in Rio de Janeiro. During his final races, he triumphed aboard Speak Alpha and Bet You Can in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, known as the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro, allowing him to execute his signature flying dismount celebration.
Reflecting on his last win, Dettori expressed surprise at clinching a Group 1 victory on his retirement day, emphasizing the emotional significance of the moment and his gratitude for his successful and fulfilling career. Despite retiring as a jockey, Dettori announced his continued involvement in the racing industry as a global ambassador for Amo Racing under Kia Joorabchian’s management.
In a heartfelt message to his fans on social media, Dettori acknowledged the profound impact of horse racing on his life, noting the incredible experiences, lifelong memories, and invaluable support from his family, colleagues, and fans throughout his four-decade-long journey. He thanked everyone who had been part of his career, expressing his appreciation for their companionship and unwavering encouragement that allowed him to pursue his dreams since he began riding at the age of 15.
