Landmark research has shown that early screening for a severe muscle-wasting disease at birth not only saves lives but also reduces healthcare costs for the NHS.

The Mirror is advocating for the implementation of a simple £5 blood test for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) on the NHS for all newborns. This call is supported by findings from an Oxford University study published in the esteemed Lancet medical journal. The study revealed that 507 babies have been born with SMA since 2019, and timely treatment with available NHS therapies can potentially cure the condition.

In the UK, the lack of newborn screening for SMA has led to delayed diagnoses, particularly for the most severe Type 1 form, with devastating consequences. In contrast, southern Belgium, which screens for SMA at birth, has seen all affected babies survive without the need for long-term medical interventions.

Recent research, led by Professor Laurent Servais and published last year, highlighted the significant impact of the UK’s decision not to implement an SMA newborn screening program. A comparison with southern Belgium, where screening is routine, underscores the positive outcomes associated with early detection and treatment.

Additionally, the study revealed a stark contrast in the financial burden of supporting SMA babies in the UK compared to those identified through newborn screening. The cost savings are substantial, reinforcing the benefits of proactive screening measures.

The Mirror has been advocating for SMA screening in the UK healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of early detection to prevent unnecessary suffering among affected children.

Pharmaceutical company Novartis estimates that delayed diagnoses result in numerous UK babies being confined to wheelchairs each year due to the progressive nature of SMA.

SMA is characterized by a genetic defect affecting the SMN1 gene, leading to a lack of essential protein production for nerve cell health. Without intervention, the condition causes muscle degeneration and severe physical limitations.

Although there are now effective treatments available on the NHS to halt SMA progression, the timing of intervention is critical to prevent irreversible disability.

The UK’s exclusion of SMA from the standard newborn screening tests is at odds with global practices, with over 45 countries already incorporating SMA screening into their protocols.

Professor Servais emphasized the urgent need for SMA screening, highlighting the significant positive impact on patient outcomes and healthcare costs. Despite recent advancements in treatment options, delayed screenings continue to pose challenges for affected children.

While the UK National Screening Committee is planning further research and a pilot program for SMA screening, the implementation of nationwide screening is not expected until 2031. In contrast, NHS Scotland has taken a proactive stance by including SMA screening in their routine newborn testing from the upcoming spring.

The Department of Health and Social Care affirmed its commitment to early SMA diagnosis and access to life-changing treatments, acknowledging the importance of research findings in guiding screening policies.

Overall, the push for SMA screening in newborns reflects a critical step towards improving outcomes for affected children and reducing the burden on healthcare systems.
