A breach at the Foreign Office has been reported, indicating that confidential data has been accessed by Chinese hackers. Business Minister Sir Chris Bryant confirmed the breach of Government servers but refrained from attributing it to China. Discussions with the Information Commissioner are ongoing to assess the impact, with authorities suggesting a low risk of individual compromise. The breach, linked to the cyber group Storm-1849, has been under investigation since October, raising concerns about data theft.

Storm-1849, known for cyber espionage, was previously accused by the UK government of engaging in “malicious” cyber activities targeting MPs and the Electoral Commission in 2024. Sir Chris acknowledged the hack, assuring that efforts were made to swiftly address the security vulnerability. Speculation on China’s involvement remains unconfirmed, emphasizing the ongoing investigation’s uncertainties.

Addressing the prevalence of cyber threats, the trade minister highlighted past incidents at JLR, Marks and Spencer’s, and the British Library, underscoring the omnipresent nature of cyber attacks in modern times. Government vigilance against potential cyber threats is underscored, with a commitment to addressing and managing such occurrences. A government spokesperson reiterated the seriousness of the incident, emphasizing the continuous efforts to investigate and enhance system security.
