The perpetrators demanded a hefty sum to prevent the dissemination of the fabricated footage online. Despite the pressure, Gareth stood firm and rejected their demands, opting to pursue legal recourse instead. Describing the ordeal as “very frightening,” the BBC personality aims to alert the public about the fraudulent scheme and advised others to remain resolute in similar situations.
Dubbed “the nation’s favorite farmer,” Gareth recounted the threat he received, warning him of potential social media exposure if he did not comply with their demands. Living in north Wales with his family, Gareth affirmed that the video was entirely computer-generated, disputing the scammers’ claims.
The deceptive scheme unfolded after Gareth was initially contacted online regarding the sale of goats for £5. Subsequently, the scammers altered their profile picture to that of a woman and initiated the blackmail attempt. Gareth highlighted the unreal nature of the AI clip sent to coerce him into payment, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in light of similar incidents affecting others.
